There are many different ways in which you can make your home more secure. From the professional installation of a home security system through a registered dealer to small, self-installed devices and everything in-between, the ways you can ensure your property’s safety are varied. Obviously, the installation of a home security system is one of the best things you can do—There are, however, any number of little things you can look at to better your family or business’ safety.

Motion detectors are always a good choice for security, whether as part of a broader installed system or just motion-activated lighting on the outside of the home. The sudden appearance of light can throw a would-be thief off their guard and, more importantly, leave them visually exposed. Thieves hate that. When faced with a thief that decides to attempt a burglary in spite of this, something as simple as making sure your doors and windows are locked may foil them. Remember: Anything that slows a thief down increases the chances that they will give up—Time is of the essence for them.

Having a dog (even a small, yapping one!) at your home may stop a potential break-in. The barking of a dog at an intruder causes a commotion and, much as with motion detectors, exposes the thief more and more. If they’re a larger animal—Like, say, a german shepherd—then the sheer physical presence of the pet may frighten off a burglar. Another good idea might be to set up an automated timing system for the lights in your home that turns them on and off at specific intervals. This provides the illusion of people being active and present in the location, which is probably one of the best deterrents possible. Most thieves will not bother with an occupied home.

While the ideas above may seem obvious, it’s the obvious things that we most commonly overlook. For example, approximately 40% of all break-ins happen due to an unlocked door or window allowing easy access for a criminal. Another seemingly obvious, yet surprisingly common, mistake that home- and businessowners make is leaving tools laying around that would make a break-in easier—Things like ladders, ropes, empty container drums, etc. Taking a little extra time to put things like that away may seem like a hassle, but it’s far less a one when compared to dealing with the aftermath of a burglary.

It cannot be stated enough times, though: An actively monitored home security system is, hands-down, your safest bet. The ideas above, while effective, all have either flaws to them that an installed security system does not, or they’re just basic common sense. A monitored home security system ensures that your valuables and loved ones are always protected by professionals with your interests at heart.
